Big Idea 1.A

Why is genetic variation an advantage for a population?

Genetic variation, or the differences in DNA among individuals, is an advantage because it increases the population's capacity for change. If a more diverse set of traits already exist in the population, natural selection has a greater variety of traits to choose the fittest individuals from.

Keep in mind the concept that evolution does not create new traits, it can only work with existing traits in the population.
