Big Idea 3.E

What causes a fight-or-flight response?

When under stress, the body's nervous system is activated by a sudden release of the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline). This causes an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate.

The response has evolved to prime the organism for action in the face of a physical (or psychological) threat.
